Public Healthcare System In India
The public healthcare system in India is organised into three main categories i.e,PHC(Primary Health Center), CHC(Community Health Center),GH(Government Hospital) & DH(District Hospital). The primary level for consultation are PHC's('Primary Health Centers) and the secondary level for consultation are CHC's('Community Health Centers) . Finally, the top level of public healthcare are the GH's(Government Hospitals) & DH's(District Hospitals) at the sub-district and district levels.
PHC (Public Health Center)
PHC's are the first point of contact between mandal/village and the medical officer. PHC's should be manned by a medical officer and supported by 14 paramedical and other staff. PHC's contain 4-6 beds for patients and they promote curative, preventive, family welfare services.
CHC (Community Health Center)
CHC's are the secondary level of public health care system and are manned by 4 medical specialists i.e, surgeon, physician, gynecologist and pediatrician supported by 21 paramedical and other staff. CHC;s are equipped with 30 in-door beds with one OT,X-ray,labour room and laboratory facilities.
GH(Government Hospital) & DH(District Hospital)
DH's are the final referral centres for the PHC's and CHC's. DH's and GH's are generally equipped to provide round the clock services for emergencies that any hospital is required to provide. DH's are manned to provied the following:
- New Born Care
- Emergency Obstetric Care including surgical interventions like caesarean sections
- Blood storage faciliy on a 24-hour basis.
